I used a YS ( Chinese) tuned pipe with no change to the engine and got an extra 2K over the stokc, muffled engine. When it came on the pipe, the sound was AWWSOME.

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

"At SMALL a lot of guys were getting a kick out of me landing with the engine still running-it just has a music wire skid to belly land on-the idle is strong enough to mow grass for a few feet and...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Boy that brings back memories. Anyone remember the Midwest foam Chipmunk? Great flier but because of the high density, full airfoil, foam wing, it turned out a bit heavy. The fuse and tail were very...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

I've run as much as 40% and the .074 just loves it. My Tsunami just comes alive. It turned out a tad heavy but I hope to shave off 3 or 4 ounces this winter.

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

You may have throttling issues. Already, without a means to adjust the mixture at idle, the small Norvels fall short at idle and acceleration. WITH nitro, adding shims or deleting could assist in...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

No, not Nelson. Nelson has a much larger diameter thread. The turbos are a copy of the Nelson concept, it seems, and the threads are much closer to stock plugs. There's just barely enough meat left...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Dan,

You're in for a real treat. Well, it would be for me, and has been, with 1/2A engines. There is not much I like to do better than to tinker and experiment. That AHA moment is what I live...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Right, now that you have the throttle body out, you need to scrape off all the glue residue from the case and the throttle. Use an old exacto blade. The hatch marks you make will give the glue better...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

I use a propane torch, VERY carefully. Play it around the case, don't hold the flame in one spot for more than a few seconds. Soon enough, you'll see the base of the carb smoking where it's glued in....

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

You have to keep the piston and cylinder together as pairs. The early engines were AAN, the Revlites had the piston nickle plated with the cylinder hard anodized. You could run an AAN piston in a...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

tru168,

Not to worry, your English is quite good. Your problem might be that you have a very early Norvel that used a cold plug. With these, you need to leave the glow igniter on for two or...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Lawrence,

Yes, I rarely start an engine at full bore. Just above idle or a bit more, maybe. Just a matter of safety. That's one reason why I try for the best idle and transition in my engines....

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Try squirting some 3in1 oil into the exhaust and flipping a few times. Then, close off the exhaust port with the piston and squirt some fuel against the side of the piston. Apply your glow igniter...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

It needs an adjustable airbleed, a means to adjust the mixture at idle. That's why it's loading up at idle, not much different from any other engine. Why most 1/2A RC engine makers don't get it, I...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Hi Bruce,

I thought it appropriate because the airplane sports a Norvel .074 converted to diesel and illustrates how well it runs that way in the cold. Traditionally, diesels require you to fuss...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Hi Lawrence,

I'm pleased to help.

Winter flying can be a lot of fun on skis. Attached is my ski design. For the winter, the crucial part is making sure that your glow plug glows strongly,...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Lawrence,

I'm glad to hear that the mods are working for you. Sorry for the late reply but RCU sometimes doesn't inform me of new posts to which I've participated in. Probably, this has...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Lawrence,

You need at least access to a drill press to bore out the throttle body accurately. The rest can be done with hand tools. I'll send you a PM.

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Lawrence,

You can also try this. Adding head gaskets reduces the compression with a slight loss in power. However, this causes the need to lean out the main needle and this is a crude way of...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Lawrence,

The Norvels were all made without a means to adjust the mixture at idle. The result was that at a low idle of 6,000 RPM, if you left it there for even a minute, the engine would load...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Damn straight, Dave. [>:]

And all is not lost.

It's still winter here, but a couple of kids who learned to fly on the WalMart offerings have gone gaga over all the tiny little engines I...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Any anodized surface has a porous, honeycomb structure. With decorative anodizing, this is where the colour pigments reside. Closing these pores by simply boiling in distilled water is what locks the...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Flipping with lots of oil a hundred times works well. However, now and again you can find yourself giving a bit too much prime. In that case, the oil gets washed out of the pores of the cylinder and...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Some of the very early Norvels had carbs that were glued in. If you have a glue in case, you can trim the bolt in carb and then just glue it in. The other way around won't work because the original...

RE: Norvel Engine FAQ

Bob,

With fresh fuel,, CP 25% and a new plug, try this. As you dial in the high end, note where it just peaks. Then, dial it in a bit more. You'll see that you can get a quarter turn or so with...
