Left aileron hinged and temporarily placed on torque rod. It'll all get put back together after covering.

Note that the torque rod arms are perpendicular to the wing bottom and the servo arms are 90 degrees to each other and face forward.

Lateral angle measured on stabilizer plate.

Wing lateral angle. I think a difference of 0.1 degree is acceptable. I only lightly sanded the wing seat.

I thought briefly about using 1/4" nylon bolts instead of the steel bolts and blind nuts supplied. However, with the scant width of fuselage plates, I though the larger holes might weaken them unacceptably.

Using a long 1/4" bit, I drilled through the fuselage and glued in the appropriate length stick.

Tail wheel mount in place; to be permanently affixed later.

I also considered replacing the kit pushrods with more modern versions. Then I remembered how long my Eagle 63 flew without any control problems. Here, I have bent the aft wires to the shape on the plans.

Here, the tip of the 3/8" square bass rod has been drilled, grooved, and sanded, ready for wire insertion and fastening.

I don't particularly care for control horns that bolt directly through balsa. After awhile, they tend to loosen as the balsa compresses under load. So, I try to add plywood plates where the control horns fasten and use self-tapping screws that do not protrude through to the other side. Here, I was chiseling a recess at the base of the rudder . . .

I did the same for one elevator half.

Using my newly acquired grooving skills, I carved 1/4" diameter recesses into the leading edges of both elevator halves. Once I had epoxied the joiner dowel, I positioned it against the horizontal stabilizer and weighted everything down.

Next up, a floor for the battery. Here you can see a cardboard pattern snugly fitting between the forward fuselage sides.

Here we have cardboard patterns for both the battery floor and the hatch cover. Note the subtle curves and notches in the floor necessary for a good fit.

I found a large piece of 1/16" ply in the scrap pile onto which I traced the floor pattern. Then, it was off to the scroll saw.

I got the floor ready for installation by attaching all the Velcro. Much easier to do before the floor gets permanently glued in.

Now that the battery floor was in place, it was time to fabricate a hatch. Using scraps and some magnets from my stash, this is what I ended up with. Pretty ugly, huh?

But, this doesn't look so bad. Covering will minimize the small gaps.

I made up servo rails from double layers of 1/8" ply left over from the kit. The first one went in where indicated on the plans; the second was located by the servos I used.

I immobilized the elevator and rudder in neutral positions before attaching clevises to control horns, then ran the servos through their range of motions to insure that there was no interference between the pushrods.

Unfortunately, while checking pushrod interference I forget that the control surfaces themselves might be clashing. Here's the result.

Fortunately, it was a clean break, easily repaired. And, yes, I have used my radio to tame the servo travel, hopefully eliminating further interference.
