Default Hostetler Bonanza build

Hello all. Well , after much delay, I have started my Hoss Bonanza. Has anyone else attempted this build?
This hasn't started out well. 3 1/2 yrs ago, I bought the plans from Hoss and the kit from Eric at dynamic Balsa while at the Toledo show. Unfortunately, the cowl and canopy windscreen were Not available at that time. Well...2 yrs later, I got the cowl ...So I figured I'd get started. Again, unfortunately finding that the kit did not match the plans well. So delay #2...
After talking with Eric at a model event, he offered to send me the updated kit parts (at no cost). Apparently, Hoss sent Eric an early plans set and subsequently changed it after some kits were made. I cannot say enough good things about Eric. He is a stand up guy.

So, here we are after a couple of months. I have accepted that the canopy will never be available ..So I'm gonna have to form my own. Not having ever vaccum formed before will be another project within a project. I figure that I'll make a removable hatch like the top flite version.

I look forward to watching you this airplane is on my short list. Will you make a traditional tail or a V tail model?

Gibb, what's the wingspan on the Bonanza you're building? 108? I'm building the Top Flite Bonanza I started waaay back in 2004.

I built a top flight v-tail about 15 yrs ago. I still have it.

The Hostetler is 108". I took a page from the top flight and made the forward canopy section. Removable. I'm now in the glassing stage.

I have been lusting after the Top Flite Bonaza and Arrow II kits for some time but when I see what one of the kits go for it's sticker shock and my wallet says "No".

I bought the engine back in 2004: OS .91 FX glow. The engine STILL hasn't seen a drop of fuel since I bought it.....I'm almost to the glassing stage myself. Decided to re-build the elevator yesterday.

The Hostetler Bonanza is a lot too large for me and the price of the short kit was also more than I was willing to spend. I have been watching for a TF Bonanza or Arrow II kit for sometime but again the prices are up in the stratosphere. I came across this one cut be Limeybob and he has hardcopy plans too at a discounted price with short kit purchased. It looks to be in my price range and size. Bud Caddell designed it and it was feathered in Flying R/C Modeler. The design shares some techniques with the Baron he designed and was featured in Scale Radio Control Modeler Magazine 6/1979. Anyone here every seen one in the flesh?

In case any of you still looking for Bonanza's: I just purchased an ESM Bonanza off Ebay last night for 300.00. It's an ARF but it's 80.5 inch WS ans looks nice. I'm going to fly this one until I get my TF Bonanza done.


They still have a few of these left for 299.00 plus shipping in case anyone, besides me, is dying to fly a Bonanza.

Well, after glassing, fitting all of the control surfaces, and sanding, I finally got around to cutting out windows. Now onto cleaning up windows and sealing up frame edges. Then priming.

Window frames look good, how much detail are you planning for the cockpit?

Good question. I am not a cockpit guy...But, without something in there it looks rather plain. Cockpit details do add weight...But??
The reason I wanted the removable top deck was so I could come back to the cockpit at a later date.

Mike, there is a chance I have the Scale R/C Modeler magazine with the article on Bud Caddell's Bonanza. I know I had the magazine at one time but whether I still have it, and if I can find it, I am not certain. The ones listed here on RCU for $600 to $800 are package deals that include the Robart Retracts, cowl & canopy from Fiberglass Specialties, the various detail kits Top Flite sold to compliment the kit and some even included an engine. Even if you do go the $150 80" IMAA size short kit route, you will have close to $1,000 (or more) in this bird by the time it's done.

I have the same stuff sitting on my shelf many of these folks have, and I wouldn't let it go for $700. Would rather build and fly it! The giant Top Flite stuff (kits and ARFs) make nice local club field flyers and most of it will show nicely at giant scale events. Two easily fit in a long bed truck or mini-van. The "trailer" planes usually wait for the weekend or a multi-day event.

I found original plans for Cadell's Beech Baron and am starting to cut the kit. I did a search for the Scale RC Modeler Baron and Bonanza magazines and found both on Ebay for a few dollars each.The Bonanza article came out about a year after the Baron article in April 1980 and featured it on the cover. IMO Cadell was a genius with design and detail. It's next to impossible to tell the model on the cover from its full size counterpart. Though the articles are available on PDF, the up close color photos in the magazines are great. I think either would be a great project for scale builders.

Lastly, I was just starting out with RC in 1979 building a 3 channel Sig Colt (box and foam wing) so Cadell's models would've been well over my head. It's great looking back in time with these magazines nearly 40 years ago and seeing what was new, hot and now long gone. Great articles and tips on building. I bought a whole year of 1981 RC Modeler mags and can't put them down!

Nice build Gibb!

I have a TF Bonanza in the queue to build. For those that have built this previously, I have concerns with the nose gear interfering with the muffler installation. What engine/muffler combination did you use?

What engine do you plan to use on your TF? A 2 cycle glow in the .75 range works great with the TF in cowling mufller. I have been gathering parts for a Caddell Bonanza A36 it slightly larger but will use the Robart retracts for the TF Bonanza. I will be using some type of in cowling muffler probably a J'Tec depending on the engine I end up choosing.
