Not much to report this week, I have been sanding as much as I am able each evening. Unfortunately hand sanding takes a toll on my right hand. Just over a year ago I had developed an aneurysm in my hand and had to have the affected artery removed. Sanding is usually limited to an hour an evening. Most of the blocking is done and I have begun to fill in visible low spots and radius some corners. If we were going to have some better weather this weekend I would push through this work and spray the first coat of primer on Sunday. We are forecasted for rain off and on all weekend so for now I will just continue at a moderate pace.

I decided today it was time to get the hatch fitted to the fuse. The first step was to cover the area with some trim Monokote. A dark color was selected to aid in visibility. The Monokote was waxed and a thin coat of PVA was applied. I'm sure I would have done without the PVA but better safe then sorry. Next a layer of 1.4 oz cloth was applied followed by a layer of 3.7. This was left to get to an 80% cure while I took my wife to the movies ( gotta keep the balance ). When we got home I mixed up some laminating resin and added some micro balloons and cabosil for for a semi runny paste. That was applied in somewhat of a framework pattern. The hatch plug was taped into place using Kapton tape as it is a little bit elastic and will keep pressure as some of the paste epoxy squeezes out. I will leave this until late tomorrow and the pop it off. I should end up with a perfectly molded hatch floor.

OK back to the airplane, I bit the bullet today and came home with a 1/2 gallon kit of Klass Kote primer. Sticker shock for sure but out of all the alternatives out there I have tried nothing works as well. It fills very well but sands easily. The really nice thing is that I can get it in primer to see any flaws, take care of the high and low spots, another maybe two applications to get it perfect and apply wax and PVA right onto the primer. I really don't see the need to have to spray an actual color onto it. Of course the last round of sanding will be wet 1000.

I strongly disagree with your statement. The Pandora is about as ugly as they get. Can't make up it's mind if it's a mono, bipe or triplane..... OH, you still don't know how it will fly. I'll bet it flies better than you think!

I'm not sure about the requirement to paint pattern planes 12 colors since I can't count that high. My fingers end at 10......
I noticed the car but didn't comment on it. This replaced the Mazda? I kind of figured you just borrowed it to try to hide that white thing next to it while you photographed the plane.
So, primer next weekend? Looking good.

Yes, we rolled the dice and picked up another Mazda 3. Virginia really liked the first one and I searched to see if the wire harness deal has happened before. This one is an 05 model but has an aftermarket exhaust, aftermarket 17" wheels, fresh air intake and KYB shocks/struts. It's also a 5 speed car. Amazingly, it only has 49,000 miles on it. I told Virginia there will be days when I stick her with the Denali.
Back to the airplane, don't you know it is a requirement to use up all your leftover paint on a pattern airplane? I have something in mind but won't talk about it until it is actually done. The prototype will most likely fly in primer so that I wound have to ruin a paint job to make any nesessary changes. I glassed the exterior surface of the hatch so all the glassing is done on the plug more or less. I still need to build a flange on the wing saddle, hatch area and the bottom of the hatch. This will result in a flange around openings in the mold to add rigidity to the mold and gives me 3 access points when joining the fuselage halves together.

I cleaned up the hatch some when I got home from work today. I am 95% happy with it. There are a couple of low spots that have to be filled prior to primer. The plan is to use a couple small pieces of transfer tape to hold the hatch to the fuse while the primer is applied and block sanded out. The hatch/canopy fit on my Hydeaway is horrible and really irritates me. This one needs to be done right. I think I am still on schedule for primer this weekend weather permitting.

Shawn, glue the (ugly) hatch to the (ugly) plane with rubber cement. It holds really well, but can be removed easily when necessary. I use it to glue paper patterns to balsa to cut and sand, and to glue stacks of wing rib blanks to cut and sand to shape. When dried overnight it sticks really well, and a little heat it pops right off. A quick wipe with acetone or thinner will remove all residue.

I will give that some thought. I already have the tape. Going to have to stop by Home Depot tomorrow to get PVC pipe and fittings to make a paint stand. Can't wait until I get it primer, the shape will really come alive when it is a solid color. On a side note, I may be picking up a 150 yard roll of glass cloth. The guy who has it can't tell me what weight it is but I should be able to see a sample tomorrow. If it works out I will have lots of extra.
