Another question for current owners, is it necessary to heat sheilding just aft of the exhausts? If so will “heat tape” be sufficient?

Default Recommendation

Hello,

I am Looking for a Fouga Magister in about 1:4 or 1:4,5 scale. Would you recommend the RC Jet Center kit ?
I am a bit concerned about ist weight, and if it flies well with a 100 size Turbine.
I would fly mainly on a grass strip with about 250meters.
What about Quality of the kit ?
Do you know other kits in this size which could be an alternative ?

Many thanks for your help.

Kind regards
Franz

Hello Franz,

The quality of the kit is very good, but needs a good once over as most ARFs do. Hardware is good, fuel tanks are good quality and none leaked. The gear is very nice and well made.

However i I tried to fly mine from grass with a 100 and I was not able to take off. So I think from grass a 140 is necessary. With full fuel mine came out at 40lbs, and I still haven’t added all the scale details.

As as far as alternatives are concerned, It depends on how much prefab your looking for. I believe the Avonds is a
similar size, however this one has much more prefab and is extremely well done and it’s pretty much competition ready right out of the box. Definitely the most beautiful ARF of the Fouga on the market.

I have an Avonds. Magnificent jet. True to scale. All linkages hidden. Will fly off grass with a 100. Mine is about 80% built.

Thank you guys

@DHC6
that helps a lot. How does it fly ? Is the higher weight an issue ?

@tp777fo
the Avonds is definitly an alternative. Are you sure that it starts from grass with a 100 ?

In any case, I wish you a lot of fun with your Magisters

Kind regards
Franz

Hello Franz,
I 'm building one just now. The overall quality is good and it is built robust and relatively heavy. I changed some of the clevices and other small hardware items. I inspected all bolts and nuts to make sure they are well tighten and used thread lock on them.
There is some work to be done in the flaps and cockpits area. Other then that nothing major. No doubt today's composite technology would result in a much lighter airframe but still the one's i saw are flying great with Kingtheck 100.
No grass airfield here but it is all about the length of the runway.
Good luck
Avi

Yes. Look at PAs website. It will do well off grass. Should weigh about 30# and with 22-24# thrust will do fine. It has a lot of wing.

Thank you all.

@Avi:
You are right, ist also a matter of the length of the runway. Ours has about 250m, that could be enough. Which turbine will you install ?

@Tom:
I read it again, sounds good. And basically, I love building the models as well. Not yet sure if I prefer building it or if I want to fly it sooner.

Kind regards
Franz

Default Turbine

Franz,
Ill installed a kingtech 120.
It flies great with 10 kg turbine but i wanted to have some extra power for go arounds or aborted landings. Again-this is not obligatory only my personal preference.
You should consider the heat disposal from the aft body so too big engine will result in extra heat.

Avi

P.S- I'm still building mine and the engine recommendation is based on 4 units i saw flying so far and discussions i made with the pilots/owners.

Hello Franz

The first ARF Fouga was also flown with HAMMER 90 ( 9 Kg Thrust ) and it flew very well ( That was before we had the option of 12 KG Turbine in Compact size - K-120 ).

Basically, The Model was designed to be flown from Asphalt.

The Optimum is 12 Kg Thrust and then you can fly from Short Runway as well (Asphalt).

We do not have real Experience with Grass.

The Model Offer You True scale in ARF Right out of the Box.

The weight is not really the issue when you fly this Model with the 12 KG Thrust and you will have More than scale flying ( The wings are made from Airex).

14Kg Thrust is too much.

thank you all. What about slow flight characteristics ? I am looking for a relaxing model. From what I have seen in the videos, it is flown rather dynamic and fast.

Concerning takeoff from grass runways, what is the diameter of the wheels ?
@DHC6: how long was your grass runway ?

Many thanks again, and kind regards

Franz,
The Fouga is the opposite of dynamic and fast. I would call it graceful and comfortable when flown medium/slow. Take a look at the video from my maiden flight a few years ago:

It flew so smooth I removed the gyro without ever trying it. In the video I was WAY fast on landing approach simply because it was my first flight. I later learned I could fly it much slower on final. Lots of lift with it's long wings and 4 flap sections.

BTW, this is the RC Jet Center Fouga with a KingTech 100. Not sure how well it would take off from grass unless it was really short and smooth.

Many thanks Craig. That helps a lot for making up my mind. I have of course already seen your Video. Congratulations - I can imagine that you are still very happy with this model, and I wish you many more nice flights.

Kind regards
Franz

Franz,

my grass runway is about 700’ long (300m-ish)

many thanks DHC6. If I calculate it right, that should be 210meters. Our runway has 250m or 820 feet.
That is a bit more but not so much that it would be safe. Is there anything on the model where you can imagine to safe some weight ?

Many thanks again, and Kind regards
Franz

Unfortunately Franz I don’t really see a way to lighten the model. Other then omitting all the scale details, which at that point would be shame as this model is so beautiful. It builds tail heavy, so you could put everything up front, including the air tanks. However doing that would take up space for the cockpit. I still didn’t add all the scale details and I was nearly 40lbs With fuel. At 40lbs and flying off grass, I really can’t see it flying on anything less then 140.

This is a great flying model, I really have mine dialed in. I would recommend adding 1 1/2 degrees of crow (about 1/8 inch) on ailerons as this really helps with slow flight to prevent tip stalling.
One warning is to check the 2 tiny set screws that hold the lower nose unit on. Yesterday mine fell off on takeoff but I landed the plane uneventfully with no damage on the grass. I am waiting to hear from Avi if they have replacement parts. I recovered the lower nose unit but whatever springs go inside is what I need.
Would be nice if someone had disassembled the nose unit with pictures or a schematic so I know how the dampening mechanism works on the nose strut. Hopefully I can get replacement parts and get back in the air soon.

Default Fouga

No crow needed , just drop flaps to T/O when flying slow ..
at 40lb wet , it’ll fly off grass field with a longer takeoff run with a 100 N turbine that’s all , the minute it picks up the speed it almost takes off by itself ...

would you happen to know what internal spring set up is for nose gear. I suspect there were 2 springs. One with easy compression and one hard to compress. I need to get proper replacements . Pictures of disassembled strut would be helpful
thanks

Thanks igoren. Really appreciate help. I need length, diameter, and wire diameter of springs. A picture of the assembly components will really help too.

Hopefully someone can provide me pictures and dimensions of the internal spring arrangement so I can purchase suitable replacements. Winter will be coming to MN soon and would like to get this bird back in the air
