Default What planes are your Diesels in?

I noticed that lot of the posting here involves small Diesels and was wondering what planes some of you have with Diesels that are flyable. I currently have a PAW .40 in a Sig Rascal 40, the Fox .50 is going in a GoldBerg Cessna 62 and the OS 1.20 AX is going on a GoldBerg Tiger 120. I sold my LT 40 that had my Irvine .53 in it, it needs a plane. When I convert my SuperTigre 2300 I'm thinking of a bi plane for it. My SuperTigre 3000 may end up on my 12 foot TeleMaster.

only currently flying small diesels here, 1cc Barbini in a 2ch 40" Simplex OT model, 1cc Jenna sideport in 2ch 45" Quaker Flash, Mills.75 in GiGi FF model, MVVS15 R/C for a Classmate Biplane
OS40LA to be converted for a Schiffermuller 72"OT model
Oh I recently converted my Norvel061 R/C to diesel with an RJL head , this is in a 22" Bandito Bipe R/C great little fun model, at low throttle its a beginners plane at full throttle its Wildddd, takes a few tries to only get 1 snap roll

I have approx 20diesel motors but some 5-6 need reconditioning or repairs, the others are NIB or good condition.

SGC,
happy to hear a Barbini flying! I have two of them, a red head one I have since its times, runs very nicely, and a new aluminium head, never flown, my wife cares it as a jewel!
How does it work yours on the simplex, how much is the flying weight....and what a mix? ?
Thanks, Ugo

Ugo,
The Barbini overpowers the Simplex40" I have added lots of downthrust to control the climb, model is old and fuel soaked with repairs about 22 1/2 oz's now, mostly use old english mix 1/1/1, but recently have been running 20% Ether,22% modded olive oil, 58% kerosine, motor runs 90seconds on 3mls of the old english mix and 98seconds on the new mix, prop is a 7x5 wood zinger, I also use an 8x4 Cox grey

SGC,
nice to hear such a small engine with olive!. I would like to have this mix posted in the fuel thread, if you agree, since there is no mix with only olive oil as lube. If you want fill the form by yourself, or I can fill for you and you edit later, if necessary.

Hobbsy, real nice Camel Sopwith..

I am using Magnum 25 XL with own made cylinderhead in Fantasy II , PAW 40 TBR R/C in Maricardo, PAW 19 TBR R/C in Antonov AN-2, David-Andersen 1cc in Keil Kraft Phantom.

I am planning to replace PAW 40 with OS 60 diesel in Maricardo.

Thankyou Jens, that is my first Bipe. Everybody marvels at my PAW .40 (mounted inverted in a Sig Rascal 40), I run a 12x6 3 blade on it, it turns it at 8,800 rpm but sounds much slower, it pulls with authority.

Mine are all control line. St G20-15 in a Dmeco Sportwing, and Rustler Cheetah in a Big Fry. I have flown a dieselized Tower 40 on my #7 Easy, but it is back to glow. I'm building a Hearns Demon, but for a Fox stunt 35.

Default RE: What planes are your Diesels in?

Mostly PAW 2.5, .19 and .35 in appropriately sized CL Stunt models Old Time and modern ...

Several in Sterling Ringmasters, a .35 in a stretched SIG Banshee, miscellaneous other CL uses, like a Frank Ehling EASY OT model. Silver Swallow 2.5 in an M&P Ercoupe profile (intended for .35 glow engines!) is almost too much grunt...

First diesel model was a first edition CG Shoestring profile with a David Andersen 2.5 back about 1956-57. 10-6 prop, about 60', .018 lines off a black U-Reely, what did a kid know? Flew solidly and quite well! Wingovers took a while, but hung out there all the way across the top. An OS Max 15D was too much for a Junior Flite Streak, back about the same time. Decade or so later, an ENYA 15DII was great, except that the comp screw tended to back off setting - since fixed with a tommy bar; got to put that one in something, again!

Fuel has been a matter of interest for about 50 years, then... Started with OK Cub diesel when available from LHS. Learned the formula early enough, and started mixing my own at about age 16 or so. How times change... Ether, then as now, was the tricky part of the game. In lower Manhattan a warehouse district included several chemical suppliers. So, this high school kid with the DA hairdo wanders into one, asks:

" Do you sell ether?

"Sure, you want a tanker car full?

"Nah, too much...

"A 50 gal drum?

"Nah, a bit much...

"5 gal?

"Nah, hey, what's the least you got I that I can pick up for some testing?

"1 gallon.

"How much?

"3$.

"Deal!"

Carried the can home on the subway, with the "Highly Flammable" label and 'skull and crossbones' poison label prominently visible...

(We hadn't discovered those recreational substances kids of that age, today, make, using ether and other stuff...)

(If we had, I guess I'd have had a more exciting adventure getting it home, or perhaps not getting it home, but meeting many, many uniformed adults, and discussing law, chemistry, hopes and plans...)

Those technical ether blends ran very well, btw, with none of the vapor and tank nonsense I've hit just recently...

There are several more stories about flying diesels in Brooklyn, NY, 50 years ago. Fond memories...

I used to be able to buy either by the pound in chemical supply houses in Atlanta, GA in the 60s. Made old English mix in those days. I had an AM 2.5 in a Jr. Flight Streak U/C that flew very well with that engine. The AM and a Frog 2.5 are in my engine collection in the garage .

I installed my PAW .40 in an old VK Nieuport 17. It's mounted at 9 o'clock, a hole in the side of the cowl for adjusting the compression screw, exhaust goes straight down. I've mounted a 13 x 6 MA antique type (no longer available). Hasn't flown yet.

My smaller ones are unemployed right now.
