It's late Christmas eve here, so I ain't gonna scan this evening, but I'll do it tomorrow if fiery doesn't do it first!

We're celebrating Christmas, but just before I fell off my chair, I realised that ol' fiery has been misleading us with the name "Mills Bomb".

The "Mills Bomb" was a forties English control liner, one of the very early ones.

This David Boddington design that we're discussing is called the "Mills Beam" (I think). As I said, we're celebrating, and that's only from memory, but I think I'm correct...

Anyway Happy Christmas to all diesel lovers!

OK, maybe the same plane has been published with two different names...
I just googled "david boddington mills beam", and I got a lot of results, so the boddington Mills Beam obviously exists (I have the plan!)
I'll have to dig through my plans.

According to info on the Web, the DB Mills Beam was published in RCM&E March 1988. That must be the plan I have. From memory, it's exactly like the plane in fiery's photos.

Here's rest of the MB article Brokenenglish. I know that Boddington did the MB for the Irvine Mills 1.3.
Article on this engine in same mag MB Pages 36-37.
Will be interesting to see your documentation on the Mills Beam. Boddington do do a lot of models. He might have done 2 the same.

I've found the RCM&E with the Mills Beam in it. I'll post it shortly. It's kinda coming back to me now. Sadly, neither David nor Ron (Moulton) are around for me to ask...
In 1988, David designed a "quick & simple" plane for the new Irvine Mills 75. That's the Mills Beam.
As I remember, in the early nineties, David left ASP/Nexus following a "financial disagreement" (I had conversations about that with both David and Ron), and he joined the rival publishing house, created by Tony Dowdeswell, as Editor of AMI.
So when Irvine released their Mills 1.3, David saw no reason not to rehash his Mills Beam design, but this time for the 1.3. This was done and published as the Mills Bomb.
I'd forgotten about this. In my mind, there was only one plane (I think they're virtually identical!).

OK. Attached are the two centre pages of RCM&E March 1988.
This is the entire (brief) write-up of the Mills Beam.
The fold-out free plan (which I have) was inserted between these pages.
Looks to me like the Mills Bomb is possibly slightly bigger...

Now we're all the more educated with this information. I was going to build the Mills Bomb for my CS Bodo Mills 1.3 but
I do have a Mk1 Irvine Mills .75 that I might build the Beam for.
Would you please let me know the span of the Mills Beam and If its smaller than the Bomb I can get my plan scaled down a bit.
The Mills Bomb is 35" span.. They definitely are identical models though to look at.

OK, as you can see, the Mills Beam article title states 31" span, but the title block on the actual plan states 32", so you can take your choice, or fudge somewhere in between, or I can measure the plan, or I can just try to scan the plan and post it...

Hi Guy's I'm the builder and owner of the Mills Bomb referred to by Fiery, I go by the handle of Red Zephyr in another forum.
FWIW I've now built 4 Mills Bombs, they've all been 3 channel RC (Throttle Rudder and Elevator) the first was powered by an unreliable Enya 09, that along with some poor wood selection saw it eventually go to Mills Bomb heaven, the second was originally built for Electric power using a 3S1P 1300mah lipo, I built it as a park flyer when I lived in Sydney (Australia), I scrapped it due to some fatigue issues with the "fuse" structure, the third (in Fiery's photos) was the second fuselage rebuilt in a hurry to get my PAW 1.49 in the air and get some ether fumes lurking in my lungs again, this one become oil infused and at one point at home fell apart in my hands. Yes I do have a fourth but have yet to "post build" test fly it, Oh, I used the same wing for the first 3.

As Fiery says, I made a small change to the original plan (apart from making it 3 channel) in that I extended the wing span by making the section of wing that sits over the "fuse", I did that to make a bit more room internally.

I see there is a bit of conjecture about the wing span, the plan that I have says it's 35 inch, I've taken a photo which I'll attach along with a few more pics of MB III. I'll drop the plan into Fiery next week for him to copy.

For Fred and anyone else interested, here is the 1988 Mills Beam plan.
You should be able to get something buildable from these scans.
So we now appear to have just about everything.
The Mills Bomb looks like a quick 10% enlargement on the photocopier!
David was always very active and busy, and sometimes had problems meeting the publishing deadline...

Had a PAW 19, from Carlson in Arizona, in my Trenton Terror old timer. Really liked it but it was difficult to get fuel. Just recently ordered some Davis fuel from Tower so maybe the PAW will get used again.

Hi all & Happy New Year ! ! !

Rare poster in these forums and first for these diesel threads, . . . . but did have a couple of querys for answers or advice.

BTW Hobbsy, how is your Saito "diesel" doing ? Is it the .80 size?

Have a few DDD heads, but have only run one 40FP (in a Kyosho Cub) , . . . . spun a 12" prop well, and looking for possibly another one for an OS32. Haven't decided yet about my K&B Sportsters, as they already spin a good size prop, but my Dynaflite big Spit is a toss up between the OS1.08 and my CDI converted Saito 150.

My main query concerns a NIB MVVS 120 twin. Bought a MVVS conversion head for my .77, . . . . and then read where it didn't make as good a conversion prospect as there .61. BUT , the 1.20 sits looking at me.

Been in touch with Dar Zeelon (rep),who gave me a factory web address, which I've also used to no avail, in attempts to locate another matching factory head, but to no avail. Might anyone here in "DIESELAND" have a lead in attempts to find another MVVS .61 diesel conversion head ? ?

Have checked the parts breakdown per the PE Rievers (sp) site, and beleive they share the same head .

May give him a call, tho, am hoping for a factory head with the T-hdle.

Sorry bout the confusion, . . . What I have is a MVVS conversion head for the .61. As they both (the .77 and the .61) seem to share the same head, . . . . . . . , I entered my bid, and bought it.

I built a full size Playboy Cabin from a Holman short kit in 1999. Started life with an Oliver Jaguar/Panther 2.5 cc diesel reproduction. Also flown with a GB 5.4 cc diesel and others. Even flew with electric power. This year I thinned out the herd and gave the Playboy away. I live in a small apartment and not a lot of room for models. New owner built a new fuselage with pylon and Fox .35 stunt for the SAM FoxaCoy event. Jack

Here's one that has turned out rather well.

A VERY simple all balsa Spitfire.
About 30" span, 12 ounces with a DC Super Merlin.
All tissue trim with 2 pack clear floor finish.
Lemon receiver and battery ticked away in centre section box which also forms the dihedral brace.
Fuselage is stiffened with a carbon tube down the centre.

Flies well on rudder/elevator.
Lovely "Spitfire" style rolls and nice loops and reversals.
The Merlin has just the right amount of power and starts in a few flicks on the running settings, no mucking about with priming needed - lovely!

Even the glide isn't too bad now that I have learned to let it find it's own fast slope.
