Hello all Laser fans,I have a Mallory Models Lasor 200 kit with glass fuselage and foam wings that I helped Bill Hinnant cut . Gosh-it has been a few years since Bill gave me this kit (an honor indeed) and it has sat for a while ;gotta get this one built and BTW it too was powered by a geared Webra 91, The markings I got from Bill are the 'Bud Light" version.

Seeing this thread reminded me that I have had the Hanno Prettner TOC Laser 200 kit by EZ sitting in my shop untouched from the day I bought it almost 20 years ago. I still think of this as the greatest model airplane kit ever made. I saw Hanno fly this plane with the big OS twin and had to have one, no matter what the cost was (and it was a lot!). Can you imagine how great this plane would be with a DA 50! My wife bought this for me but I got back into pylon racing and there it sat unopened and untouched.

here is the one i had, first big plane, I am almost sure it was built from Ulery-MAM plans, The plans were in bad shape and had gotten wet, i got rid of them last year.
I had a webra bully35, the wings were made with foam ribs, I cannot remember how much it weight but I do remember it was great. the photo is 84-85?
Note "CRAPTECH" was alive and well back then...TMG

I bought a 1/4 scaler from a Lanier kit and have mounted a 1.08 in it. That's as big as will fit in the Escort! It's my winter St. Louis project.

Version #2- Stretch fuselage to 2 meters with spinner and use custom Dave Guerin Focus 3 wing/stab. The wing will have no dihedral and mount in identical stock location. The stab will be moved rear-ward. It will be my first attempt to create a 2 meter pattern model.
I have been building a few more stick and tissue models like the little Andreason B-A4B below.
I have no monetary connection and receive no financial renumeration from the "elves" creativity.

BERUSTY, would you repost the construction article. I sure would like it as I am going to build this plane again. I can not get your link to download. I built one years ago with an OPS 30 in it. I still have a bunch of templates from the build I did earlier so should not take to much to get one started. This one will have a DLE 30 in it if I can keep the weight down.

I am now in the process of building this plane again. I built one that was one the cover of Scale RC in 1991. I received the DLE 30 that this one will be powered with today, still waiting on landing gear and wing tube from TNT. The last one I built I had a solid foam wing core. This one will have the foam ribs with a 1 1/4 wing tube. When I get the wing tube I will start on the fuselage. Built most of the tail section today, will finish tomorrow. Tomorrow I will order cowl, wheel pants, and canopy from Fiberglass Specialties.

My electric Ulrey Laser is underway too. Had the plans for many years, finally started it a month or so ago. I'm using an AXI 5330/FAI and 10S packs for power.

I considered a DL 30 for a 2 meter pattern version of my Laser but ran the numbers and concluded that even at 11 lbs it wouldn't have enough poop to do the Masters sequence. I went the electric rout. Airplane is about 1/2 built. The great thing about the Laser though is that one does not have to use alot of power to make the airplane shine. Lots of the flying I do with my 33% is at 1/3 to 2/3 power. Slow verticals, point rolls, rolling circles you name it the ol'e Laser still does them and at a speed that would have most Extras crying lol. Hope the build goes well.

I just fly for sport, just fly like I want (no routines) This same plane I had back in the early 90's had a zen,35 and it flew fine. I am hoping with a little less wieght it should fly fine with the thirty. I have a Great Planes Wagstaff 300 and it has excess power with the DLE 55 on it and it wieghts right at 16 lbs. Got tail feathers one today and put the band saw and planer to good use, made all my 1/4 stringers.

Round off only the leading edges and theave the trailing edges square. The added turbulence does two things, first it actually makes the surface more powerful and feel tighter around center. A side benifit of this and the flying wired is that it adds a good deal of drag to the tail. This will lead to better tracking. Imagine it working the same as feathers or quills at the tail of an arrow.

Like CPLR's canalizer it is all in how you look at things.
Some say YES it works. Many others say it does little to nothing.
It has been that way since I started in Pattern circa 1960.
The more things change the more they stay the same.
Follow the winner's lead . That is what Pattern is on the design stage.
Considering when I started they are all modified Tauruses.

The foam rib method Mr. Ulery developed is really not that difficult once you build a jig to hold the ribs. It will also build a lighter wing than a full foam core. It can be done rapidly. Once you have done one the second is much quicker. I built a Hanson Runaround wing and saved 9 ounces over the original sheeted foam and the method allows the same accuracy as a foam wing. The look is a little different but the flying qualities are at least as good. It isn't the thing for a pure recreation of a classic but it's fun to experiment with. I think the weight savings is mostly in reduced amounts of glue,. The reduced materials must help too, though, as you'd never use that many ounces of glue

Hey Vince,
Just to give credit where credit to due, the TOC Laser was not done by Godfrey, it was an Ulrey Laser. Both the 85" one Dean Koger flew in the 1978 and later Dave and many others flew in the 1980 TOC and the 100" version many more flew in the 1982 and 1984 TOC.
Godfrey later acquired the design and produced the 100" version. Wayne Ulrey is the designer and one of the true innovators of pattern and TOC model design in the 70's and 80's.
